Radiant Cut Diamond Rings

Radiant cut diamond rings combine a strong geometric shape with exceptional brilliance. Usually square or rectangular with distinctive cropped corners, the radiant cut offers the clean lines of an angular diamond while using brilliant-style faceting to create lively sparkle across the stone.

At Polished Diamonds, you can choose a certified natural or lab-grown radiant diamond and pair it with platinum, white gold, yellow gold or rose gold. Radiant diamonds work particularly well in solitaire diamond rings and solitaire accent diamond rings, where the angular outline and brilliance of the centre diamond remain the focus of the design.

Because radiant cut diamonds can vary considerably in proportions, facet pattern and face-up appearance, we recommend comparing the actual diamond rather than selecting by carat weight alone. Our jewellery designers can then incorporate the precise measurements of your selected diamond into CAD and design the setting specifically around it.

Choosing a Radiant Cut Diamond

Radiant cuts belong to the family of fancy-shaped diamonds and can range from almost square through to distinctly elongated rectangles.

When comparing radiant diamonds, consider the stone’s actual length and width, symmetry, cropped corners, facet pattern and overall face-up appearance alongside colour, clarity and carat weight.

Two radiant diamonds with the same carat weight can have noticeably different dimensions and visual presence. A deeper stone may carry more of its weight beneath the surface, while another diamond may spread its weight more visibly across the finger.

Unlike the standard round brilliant, fancy-shaped diamonds such as radiants do not currently receive an overall GIA cut grade. This makes assessment of the individual diamond particularly important. Look beyond the grading numbers and consider whether the stone appears bright, balanced and attractive when viewed face-up.

Square or Elongated Radiant Cut Diamonds

One of the attractions of the radiant cut is the freedom to choose its proportions.

A radiant close to equal length and width creates a more compact, square appearance. Increasing the length-to-width ratio produces a progressively more elongated rectangular diamond.

Neither is inherently better. The right proportion depends on the appearance you prefer, the dimensions of the finger and the ring design surrounding the diamond.

An elongated radiant can create a strong visual line along the finger and suits clients drawn to shapes such as emerald cut diamond rings and elongated cushions, but who want considerably more brilliant-style sparkle.

A squarer radiant provides a geometric appearance similar in overall footprint to a princess cut diamond ring while replacing the princess cut’s sharp points with cropped corners.

Rather than selecting according to one theoretical ratio, we recommend comparing the actual proportions of suitable diamonds and considering how each will look within the finished ring.

Radiant Cut Sparkle and Facet Pattern

The radiant cut was developed to combine an angular outline with brilliant-style light return.

Its faceting is very different from the broad parallel step facets seen in an emerald cut. Instead, a radiant creates numerous smaller flashes of light across the diamond, producing a more energetic and sparkling appearance.

Facet patterns can also vary between individual radiant diamonds. Some display a highly fragmented appearance sometimes described as a crushed-ice effect, while others show larger and more clearly defined areas of brightness and contrast.

Neither appearance should be chosen purely from specifications on a certificate. Viewing the individual stone helps determine whether its particular pattern of brilliance suits your preference.

Radiant Cut vs Emerald, Princess and Cushion Diamonds

Radiant diamonds share visual characteristics with several other geometric diamond shapes, but their faceting and outline give them a distinctive appearance.

An emerald cut diamond ring can also have a rectangular outline and cropped corners, but its step-cut facets create broad flashes of light and a more architectural, mirror-like appearance. Choose radiant if you like the rectangular outline of an emerald but prefer significantly more sparkle.

A princess cut diamond ring also uses brilliant-style faceting but typically has four sharp corners. A radiant’s cropped corners soften the outline and provide a different setting profile.

A cushion diamond ring has rounded rather than cropped corners, creating a softer silhouette. The radiant is generally the more angular choice for someone who prefers clean geometric lines.

Radiant Cut Diamond Ring Styles

The combination of strong lines and brilliant sparkle makes the radiant cut suitable for a wide range of engagement ring designs.

A solitaire diamond ring places the radiant diamond at the centre of the design and allows its proportions and facet pattern to remain clearly visible.

A solitaire accent diamond ring adds smaller diamonds through the shoulders of the band, extending the sparkle around the centre stone without changing its distinctive outline.

Radiant diamonds can also work beautifully in halo diamond rings, where a border of smaller diamonds can follow the cropped rectangular shape and increase visual presence.

For a three-stone composition, explore our trilogy diamond rings. The centre radiant can be combined with complementary side diamonds and proportioned as one complete design.

Natural or Lab-Grown Radiant Diamonds

Polished Diamonds offers both natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds in radiant shapes.

Both are genuine diamonds and can be assessed using characteristics including carat weight, colour, clarity, dimensions, polish and symmetry. The principal difference is their origin.

Natural diamonds appeal to clients who value geological origin, rarity and individuality, while lab-grown diamonds can provide greater flexibility around diamond size and specifications within a given budget.

With radiant diamonds, we also recommend considering the individual stone’s proportions and face-up facet pattern rather than selecting purely from the grades on its certificate.

Custom Radiant Cut Diamond Rings Made in New Zealand

Radiant cut diamonds particularly benefit from a ring setting designed around the measurements and proportions of the actual centre stone.

Through our Design Your Own Diamond Ring service, Polished Diamonds can incorporate your selected radiant diamond’s exact dimensions into a professional three-dimensional CAD model before manufacture begins.

This allows our designers to refine details such as claw placement, setting height, band width, diamond orientation, accent-stone proportions and wedding-ring clearance around the individual centre diamond.

Detailed CAD renders allow you to review the ring from different angles and refine its proportions before it is made.

Once approved, our dedicated New Zealand jewellery workshop crafts your radiant cut diamond ring, combining precision jewellery technology with skilled craftsmanship, diamond setting, and hand finishing.
