Proposal Rings – Propose Now, Design Together Later

A proposal should still have the magic of surprise—but the engagement ring does not have to be a guess.

A Polished Diamonds proposal ring gives you something beautiful to propose with without having to secretly choose an expensive engagement ring your partner may wear for the rest of their life.

Pop the question with a proposal ring or placeholder engagement ring, then visit Polished Diamonds together to create the permanent ring. Your partner can try different diamond shapes, ring styles and precious metals, compare natural and lab-grown diamonds, and be involved in designing a ring that genuinely feels like them.

You keep the surprise of the proposal while making the forever ring a shared decision. Once your design is approved, we create your engagement ring through our New Zealand jewellery workshop, typically within 1–2 weeks.

The Perfect Proposal Ring

What Is a Proposal Ring?

A proposal ring, also known as a placeholder engagement ring, temporary engagement ring or stand-in engagement ring, is a ring used for the marriage proposal before the permanent engagement ring has been selected or designed.

It allows the proposal itself to remain a genuine surprise while giving both partners the opportunity to choose the final engagement ring together afterwards.

For couples considering a custom engagement ring—or where the proposer is unsure about diamond shape, ring style, precious metal or finger size—a proposal ring removes much of the pressure of making an expensive design decision alone.

You still have a ring for the moment you ask the question, but the permanent ring can be chosen together once the engagement has begun.

Keep the Proposal a Surprise. Design the Ring Together.

Choosing an engagement ring for someone else involves a surprising number of decisions.

Your partner may prefer an oval diamond when you expected round, platinum instead of yellow gold, a simple solitaire rather than a halo—or something completely different once they have had the opportunity to try rings on.

Then there is diamond size, natural versus lab-grown diamonds, finger size, setting height, band width and all the smaller details that make an engagement ring personal.

A proposal ring removes that uncertainty without taking anything away from the proposal itself.

You can plan the location, timing and surprise exactly as you want, propose with a ring in hand and celebrate the engagement together. Afterwards, choosing the permanent engagement ring becomes part of the experience rather than something one person has had to decide in secret.

An engagement ring may be worn every day for decades. Designing it together means the diamond, setting, metal, proportions and details can genuinely reflect the person who will wear it.

01 – Choose a Proposal Ring

Select a proposal ring to use for the moment you ask the question. You do not need to commit to the final engagement-ring design before proposing.

The proposal ring gives you something meaningful to present while leaving the important design decisions until afterwards.

02 – Pop the Question

Plan the proposal exactly as you want it.

Your partner still receives a ring when you ask them to marry you, preserving the traditional surprise and excitement of the proposal without requiring you to guess the permanent engagement ring in advance.

03 – Celebrate Your Engagement

Enjoy the engagement and let your partner wear the proposal ring while you decide when you would like to start designing the permanent ring.

There is no need to rush straight from the proposal into choosing jewellery.

04 – Visit Polished Diamonds Together

Visit our Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch design studio together.

Our team can professionally measure the correct finger size and help you compare different diamond shapes, gemstones, metals and engagement-ring styles in person.

05 – Design the Forever Ring

Choose from natural or lab-grown diamonds, coloured gemstones, platinum and gold, then develop the ring around your preferred style and budget.

Our jewellery designers use advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to create accurate renders of the engagement ring before manufacture, allowing you to refine the design and proportions together.

06 – We Make Your Engagement Ring

Once the design is approved, your engagement ring is created through our dedicated New Zealand jewellery workshop, typically within 1–2 weeks.

The full amount paid for your proposal ring is credited towards your final Polished Diamonds engagement ring, subject to our proposal-ring terms.

Why Choose a Placeholder Engagement Ring?

A proposal ring gives you the best of both approaches: the proposal can remain a surprise while the permanent engagement ring becomes a shared decision.

Keep the Proposal Secret

You do not need to ask detailed questions about diamond shapes, metals, ring sizes and engagement-ring designs beforehand and risk revealing your plans.

Avoid Guessing Their Style

Engagement rings are highly personal. A style that looks perfect online may not be the ring your partner chooses once they try different designs on their hand.

Avoid an Expensive Mistake

Rather than spending thousands of dollars on a permanent engagement ring based on assumptions, you can make the final investment once you know exactly what your partner likes.

Get the Finger Size Right

After the proposal, your partner’s finger can be professionally measured before their engagement ring is designed and manufactured.

Design the Ring Together

Selecting the diamond, metal and ring design can become an enjoyable part of the engagement rather than a decision one person has to make alone.

Still Propose With a Ring

You retain the traditional moment of opening a ring box and placing a ring on your partner’s finger when you propose.

Design Your Forever Engagement Ring Together

After the proposal, you can create the permanent engagement ring together with a Polished Diamonds jewellery designer.

Start by trying different ring styles and comparing diamond shapes. You can then choose the details that matter to you, including:

  • natural or lab-grown diamonds
  • diamond shape and size
  • coloured gemstones
  • platinum, white gold, yellow gold or rose gold
  • solitaire, halo, trilogy or vintage-inspired settings
  • setting height and band width
  • accent diamonds and finer design details
  • your preferred overall budget.

Our designers then create the ring using Computer-Aided Design (CAD).

The measurements of the selected diamond and the correct finger size can be incorporated into the digital model so you can see accurate proportions before the ring is manufactured.

You can refine the design together until you are happy with the result. Once approved, the finished engagement ring is created through our New Zealand jewellery workshop and hand-finished by our team.

Solitaire Engagement Rings

A solitaire places a single centre diamond or gemstone at the heart of the design. The clean setting keeps attention on the chosen stone and can range from very traditional to contemporary.

Halo Engagement Rings

A halo surrounds the centre diamond with smaller diamonds, adding brilliance and increasing its visual presence. Halo proportions and centre-stone shape can be customised during the design process.

Trilogy Engagement Rings

A trilogy or three-stone engagement ring features three principal diamonds or gemstones. The centre and side-stone proportions can be adjusted to create anything from a strongly defined centre stone to greater diamond coverage across the finger.

Proposal Ring FAQs

What is a proposal ring?

A proposal ring is a temporary or placeholder engagement ring used for the proposal before the permanent engagement ring is selected or designed. It allows the proposal to remain a surprise while the final ring can be chosen together afterwards.

Is it okay to propose with a placeholder engagement ring?

Yes. A placeholder engagement ring allows you to propose with a ring while giving your partner the opportunity to help choose a permanent engagement ring they may wear every day for many years.

Why use a proposal ring instead of buying the engagement ring first?

A proposal ring removes the need to guess your partner’s preferred diamond shape, ring style, precious metal or finger size. You can keep the proposal secret and make the permanent design decision together afterwards.

Do I need to know their exact finger size?

You do not need to know the final engagement-ring size before proposing. After the proposal, Polished Diamonds can professionally measure your partner’s finger before the permanent ring is designed.

Can we design the engagement ring together?

Yes. After the proposal, you can visit Polished Diamonds together to select the diamond or gemstone, metal, ring style and design details before viewing the proposed ring in CAD.

Can we choose either a natural or lab-grown diamond?

Yes. Polished Diamonds offers both natural and lab-grown diamonds. Our designers can help you compare size, quality, appearance and price before choosing the diamond that best suits your preferences and budget.

How long does the final engagement ring take to make?

Once the CAD design has been approved, Polished Diamonds typically creates the engagement ring through our New Zealand workshop within 1–2 weeks.

What happens to the money paid for the proposal ring?

The full amount paid for the proposal ring is credited towards your final Polished Diamonds engagement ring, subject to our proposal-ring terms.
