Choosing an Emerald Cut Diamond
An emerald cut is a fancy-shaped diamond with long, parallel step facets and a large open table. These facets create alternating areas of light and dark often described as a hall-of-mirrors effect.
Unlike a round brilliant diamond, an emerald cut does not currently receive an overall GIA cut grade. When comparing emerald diamonds, it is therefore useful to look beyond carat weight and consider the stone’s actual dimensions, outline, polish, symmetry and face-up appearance.
Two emerald cut diamonds with the same carat weight can have different lengths, widths and depths. Comparing the millimetre measurements helps show how much of the diamond will actually be visible once it is set into the ring.
Why Clarity Matters in an Emerald Cut Diamond
Emerald cuts generally reveal the interior of a diamond more readily than heavily faceted brilliant cuts. Their broad, open facets do less to disguise inclusions, making the location and visibility of clarity characteristics particularly important.
This does not mean that every emerald diamond requires an exceptionally high clarity grade. The better approach is to assess whether inclusions are visible and whether they interfere with the clean, open appearance that makes the emerald cut distinctive.
Colour can also be more noticeable in a step-cut diamond, so colour, clarity and overall appearance should be considered together rather than purchasing purely from the grading numbers.
Emerald Cut Proportions and Length-to-Width Ratio
Emerald cut diamonds range from relatively compact rectangles through to noticeably elongated shapes.
Length-to-width ratio describes this relationship between the diamond’s length and width, but there is no single ratio that is ideal for everyone. Some people prefer a more traditional rectangular emerald shape, while others favour a longer, slimmer diamond.
We recommend selecting proportions based on visual preference and the actual dimensions of the diamond rather than trying to achieve one theoretical ratio. Band width, finger size, setting style and side diamonds can all influence how those proportions look in the finished ring.
Emerald Cut vs Asscher and Radiant Diamonds
Emerald, Asscher and radiant diamonds all feature cropped corners, but their optical appearance is quite different.
An Asscher Cut Diamond Ring uses step-cut facets like an emerald cut but generally has a squarer outline and a more geometric appearance.
A Radiant Diamond Ring can also be rectangular, but its brilliant-style faceting creates considerably more sparkle and a more fragmented pattern of reflected light.
Choose an emerald cut if you prefer clean lines, broad flashes and an architectural appearance; consider a radiant if brilliance is the priority, or an Asscher if you prefer a square step-cut shape.
Emerald Cut Diamond Ring Styles
