Ring Re-Tipping
$40
If claw tips are missing from a ring, the gemstone is not secure and can be lost. We charge $40 per claw tip to secure your gemstones. Gold and Platinum must be supplied to build a new claw; our workshop will shape and complete the work. All claws should be replaced at the same time. Sometimes, a new setting is required if the sides are worn and putting a new tip onto the claw/prong is impossible. Select the number of claws required and visit a Polished Diamonds shop to discuss options.

More Information about Ring Re-Tipping:
Your diamond ring is more than just a beautiful piece of jewellery—it’s a valuable investment and often holds deep sentimental value. Over time, the prongs that hold your diamond securely in place can wear down. This is where ring re-tipping becomes essential.
What Is Re-Tipping?
Re-tipping is the process of restoring the small metal prongs that grip your diamond or gemstone. These claws/prongs are crucial for holding the stone securely in its setting. Daily wear, accidental bumps, and exposure to chemicals can cause claws/prongs to weaken or erode. If left unaddressed, this wear can lead to loose stones or even loss of the diamond.
When Should You Consider Re-Tipping?
Signs that your ring may need re-tipping include:
- Claws/prongs appear thin, flat, or worn down.
- The diamond seems loose or moves slightly in the setting.
- A claw/prong is bent, broken, or missing.
- The claws/prongs snag on clothing or other materials.
Jewellery experts recommend having your ring inspected at least once a year to catch any claw/prong issues early.
The Re-Tipping Process
At our jewellery studio, re-tipping is performed by skilled craftsmen using advanced techniques. First, we thoroughly inspect your ring to determine the extent of the wear. Then, we carefully add matching metal—typically 14K or 18K gold, platinum, or palladium—to the worn prongs. The new metal is shaped and polished to restore the original strength and appearance of the setting. Finally, we ensure your diamond is secure and perfectly aligned.
Why Re-Tipping Matters
Re-tipping is a crucial yet straightforward repair that can prolong the life of your engagement ring or heirloom jewellery. By maintaining strong claws/prongs, you avoid costly repairs and protect your cherished gemstones from loss.
How Much Does Re-Tipping Cost?
Costs vary depending on the metal type and number of prongs. Generally, re-tipping costs between $25–$60 per claw/prong. If multiple prongs need attention, we offer bundle pricing for full re-tipping services.
